Rough Sketches November 2023

Lines and lines and lines and mesh lines

This batch of very lined and mesh-filled sketches were drawn November 12th through to December 8th 2023. I just transcribed this text via AudioPen, which is a fun and free little app for phone and computer.

"I liked drawing lines and making textures. I used my pen to make light and dark areas in a fun way. This felt like a calming and repeating activity. Sometimes it was messy, but I enjoyed it.

At the same time, I was into still life art, especially with flowers and indoor scenes. I looked at other artists' work for ideas. I wanted to make my own unique art too. I used AI tools to explore new words and ideas for my art.

My process started with pen and paper or cutting out shapes. Then, I took a photo of it and put it on my iPad or computer. Sometimes, I drew it again in Stable Doodle or talked to the computer about it. GPT-4 Vision helped me see new things in my art. Finally, I used Stable Diffusion to finish my artwork."

Full transcript: "It was around this time that I was getting a bit obsessed with lines and mesh and texture. I found a way to use my pen to draw lines quite accurately. I really wanted to use that to create more tone and light and dark more effectively. In a less traditional way, I wanted to, I don't know quite what I was doing, but I enjoyed doing it. It was quite a therapy to do it. Fairly mindless, it was expressive but it was more of a repetitive process. I was enjoying doing it. I was getting some quite nice effects. It was just putting pen to paper, ink to paper. I was making a bit of a mess sometimes. I wasn't creating anything really. It was the same sort of time. Moving on to another section, I was fairly obsessed with still life, floral still life and interior still life. It was the autumn time. I was inside a fair bit. I was looking at lots of references to do with still life, looking at some of the artworks I respected for that. Really coming across lots of really interesting stuff. I really wanted to take my own perspective on it as well. Make it something of my own. This was interesting. I played around with some words, doing some research with the AI tools we have now. It's really fascinating what you can do. I played around with my own language, using words around that. I was getting some good results. I started off with a more normal way. I start with pen and paper, a bit of card. I cut out sometimes. I was getting something good. Then I often photograph it, put it in iPad or put it on the computer. Then play around with it a bit. Then I hand draw it sometimes into Stable Doodle. Or I just start talking to the computer based on that. GPT-4 Vision now lets you interpret it. It's quite interesting what it comes up with. Then put it in Stable Diffusion or versions of that."
